Musk Reveals Update on Neuralink
Some of us are truly addicted to our phones. But could you imagine becoming truly symbiotic with your mobile device?
The idea of connecting the brain and machine has been a sci-fi fascination for ages. In last year’s HBO series Years and Years, one character even attempts to become “trans-human” by implanting a computerized plate directly into her brain, letting her control her phone and computer with the wink of an eye.
But it may not be a simple fantasy. Elon Musk, the eccentric billionaire founder of Tesla and SpaceX, has teased a big announcement around another of his innovative ventures. They call it Neuralink. And it intends to augment humans with AI capability.
What is Neuralink?
In July 2019, Musk showed off the very first iteration of Neuralink. Though it certainly had a way to go, the central concept of the device is to link a person with a computer by installing slender electrodes into the brain. These tiny little wires attach to a pod that sits outside of the ear, resembling a hearing aid. But it allows a user to communicate directly with a personal computer.
Is it for real?
Not just yet. There’s still work to be done before a commercially-available (and full-functioning) version of Neuralink is a reality. But Musk seems to think that when it is ready, it will be revolutionary.
“Don’t want to get too excited, but the potential is truly transformational for restoring brain & motor functions,” the tycoon tweeted in February. In the meantime, Musk hopes that the invention will help folks deal with the brain and spinal cord injuries or congenital defects.
Still, you’ll have to tune into the live presser yourself to learn what exactly Musk’s company has achieved. The live stream of the announcement will take place Friday, August 28 at 6 P.M. Eastern Time. See below for a link to the live stream.
